What DALI and DALI-2 do

DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) is an open lighting control standard. Each DALI driver has its own address on a two-wire control line, so every fitting can be controlled on its own or in a group without rewiring the power circuits. DALI-2 is the current version. It adds tested interoperability between brands and standard support for sensors and push-button panels, so controls and drivers from different makers can share a line.

Groups and scenes

One DALI line takes up to 64 addressable drivers, arranged into up to 16 groups and 16 scenes. A group might be a row of high bays, an open-plan zone or a classroom. A scene is a preset set of levels, like "presentation" in a meeting room with the front lights dimmed. Groups are set in software, so when a tenant moves walls or a warehouse changes its racking, you reprogram instead of recabling.

Sensors and daylight

Occupancy and absence sensors switch off or dim the lights in empty areas, and daylight sensors dim fittings near windows and skylights. In a warehouse, aisle sensors mean only the aisle in use runs at full. These controls are where most of DALI's running-cost savings come from, on top of the LED fittings themselves.

Retrofit or new build

On a new build or full fit-out, the DALI cable runs with the power and every fitting gets a DALI driver from the start. On a retrofit, we look at what's in the ceiling now. Existing fittings may need new DALI drivers or replacing, and the control line may need adding. Where a new control cable isn't practical, we can talk about wireless options. Either way, what has to change is set out before you commit.

Fittings and control together

We spec the fittings with the control, so the drivers, sensors and controllers all suit each other: downlights, panels, battens, high bays, and exit and emergency lighting. Do you install?

Yes, supply only or supply and install. We do the DALI programming and commissioning ourselves and work with licensed electricians on site.
